On this day - 6th February 2016

I’m currently sat at home listening to the howling wind and driving rain outside, it’s been terrible weather all day here in County Meath. Only the hardiest of photographers will be going out today, so I chickened out and opted for a day to brush up on my editing skills.

I was looking through my library of photos and thought it would be good to edit a photo that was taken on this day in the past. I had to go back 6 years to find one. It seems that I have a dislike to taking photographs in February. I can’t blame the weather all the time, as generally I will venture out in most conditions.

On this day, back in 2016, I was on the Black Sand beach at Vík, Iceland. It was my first trip to Iceland and my first photo workshop with Explorelight . It was a fabulous trip, which gave me the opportunity to photograph some amazing scenery.

I was blown away by the contrast between the foaming white sea against the dark sand. I’d never seen black sand before, and it was truly mesmerising. The next challenge was how to capture that in photo, without getting too close to the water. The sea on the South Coast of Iceland has some very strong waves that regularly pull unsuspecting people in, so its best to photograph from a safe distance.

By watching the waves, I could see the patterns that they were producing and it was just a matter of time waiting for that perfect moment when they filled the frame. I decided to get low down as I wanted to show the height of the waves and include the gorgeous clouds above us.

A great memory to relive and share.

Canon 6D and EF24-70mm lens. Focal length was at 50mm. ISO100 at 1/4sec, f/16
